Utilizing Islam For A Sound Mind In A Sound Body

Reading the Holy Quran or just listening to its recitation at any time is very beneficial, rewarding to the mind and soothing to the heart. But reading it especially during the night is all the more beneficial. Besides, it keeps the brain sharp during the next day!

Cleanliness is emphasized a lot in Islam. One has to be clean both in the body and especially so in the heart before praying. If one is unclean, then Ghusl (full body ritual purification) is required. And Wudhu (ritual ablution/washing) is compulsory before Salah/Namaz (prayer). It is always better to be in the state of Wudhu and even before going to sleep. For one never knows when the sister of sleep, i.e., death will overcome us!

Miswak (Salvadora persica) twig is very beneficial not just for the teeth but also keeps the brain sharp. It helps prevent dental caries, keeps the mouth odor-free and fresh. Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) strongly recommended it!

Kalonji (Nigella sativa) seeds are very useful. Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) used to say that the seeds contained a cure for all diseases except death! It has been proved that kalonji seeds and their oil contain phytochemicals, including phytosterols that have demonstrated a wide range of therapeutic benefits, including weight loss. A lot more research is required to exploit the hitherto unexplored benefits of these seeds.

Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) highly recommended this and he himself practiced it. It has been found to increase work productivity so much so that big companies like Google, Microsoft, etc. have even made arrangements for their employees to take siestas!
