India has some beautiful destinations yet to be explored by the world. One among them is Lakshadweep Islands. Lakshadweep literally means One Lakh Islands. Although these are not in such a huge number!  It is an archipelago of 36 islands that serves as the maritime boundary between the Arabian Sea to the west and the Laccadive Sea to the east. It is an Indian Union Territory. Its capital is Kavaratti and Jeseri is the primary language spoken here.

Lakshadweep Islands form the smallest Union territory of India. The region forms a single district with 10 sub-divisions.  Of the 36 islands, 10 are inhabited with people. Islam is the majority religion here. It was established when Muslims arrived here in the seventh century.

Why is Lakshadweep in the news and what is the surrounding controversy?

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep Islands and went snorkelling there. He urged Indian tourists to visit these beautiful islands. This irked few ministers in Maldives, a popular tourist destination about 400 Kilometers away from Lakshadweep. A few of them posted derogatory comments on social media. Three of them were suspended by the Maldives government. Maldives is the favorite destination of several famous Indian personalities. And it is currently facing a backlash and boycott over the unsavory remarks!
